Master of Business Administration and Engineering (M.B.A.E.)

The Masters programme in Business and Engineering comprises four semesters and aims to integrate technology expertise and business acumen.

The programme offers business and legal studies at the postgraduate level with a moderate specialisation in areas of logistics and project management. Equipped with with the capacity to recognise and appreciate economic thought and action patterns as well as business administrative and engineering tools and methodologies, they are able to analyse and interpret data and situations and present their findings targeted to specific audiences. Students will be able to act competently in functional, methodological and social contexts.

Merging the technologically feasible with the economically correct, thinking strategically and – ever more important – acting ecologically responsible, business engineers are uniquely positioned to apply their problem solving skills to interdisciplinary technology/business challenges. They are able to take into consideration a variety of perspectives, develop economic and technical solutions, and assess production and business processes technically, economically and ecologically.

The Master of Business Administration and Engineering is highly regarded not just regionally; it enjoys a nationwide ‘brand name’ reputation, particularly as it builds on knowledge and skills previously acquired in a first degree in either technical, engineering, architecture or computer science fields. This Masters programme is a non-consecutive programme and does not require a Bachelor degree in business administration and engineering from the University of Applied Science (Fachhochschule) or any other institution. Instead, it caters to students with a degree level background in a technical or engineering field from any university level institution. Practical experience is not a requirement for admission, but it is highly recommended.

Market demand for qualified and highly educated industrial engineers continues to be high. What used to be a trend toward specialisation in the field is increasingly replaced interdisciplinary approaches. Generalists able, for example, to oversee and manage the entire production process in all technical and economical aspects are sought after.

Graduates with a Masters degree in Business Administration and Engineering find employment in a broad field of sectors. Industry, trade, and service providers all have an increased need for these professionals. Preferred functional areas include logistics, marketing, business management, controlling, as well a research and consulting. Demand is also high in production, information management, human resources and project management.

Logistics has established itself as the top field for employment in recent years. Business administration and engineering professionals with an interdisciplinary background are ideally qualified to oversee and complete the full range of tasks related to the supply chain management of various sectors.

According to a study conducted by the professional body VWI, more than 90% of industrial engineers are active within the private sector, two thirds of which are in leadership roles. 15% are self-employed, while 77% are employed by privately-held businesses, and less than 8% work in the public sector.
