German Language and Communication

The department of German Language and Communication at the University Language Center (FSZ) offers both students of the university and exchange students a comprehensive range of specialised language courses. The goal of these courses is to facilitate communication in typical German academic situations.

The programme, which is continually updated and modified, includes the following range of courses:

The Integrative Module

The Integrative Module is an interdisciplinary programme with the function of helping foreign students to optimise the qualifications they have already acquired for studies at a German institute of higher education. The focus of the module includes techniques for academic work, grammar for German academic language, logic and reasoning, learning techniques, time management, elocution and communication. Students from economically developing countries who successfully complete their studies are exempted from study fees.

German Language and Communication

By means of authentic texts and situations, listening, reading, speaking and writing skills are exercised during the course. As far as possible, texts, tasks, and language exercises are adapted to real situations that students are likely to encounter. However, grammar skills, vocabulary, pronunciation and orthography are also trained in the course.

German for Studies: Grammar, Style, Text

To study always means to write as well. The better you can write, the easier you will find your studies to be. Texts are easier to deal with when you have mastered the language. The key to a language lies in its grammar. When you have mastered this system, you also learn to think properly in the language: logically, clearly and economically. After all, it is not only language that determines thought: thought also determines language.

German as a Foreign Language, Intensive Course (Exchange programme)

In this course, basic skills are intensively trained at all language levels: listening and reading comprehension, using texts relating to current topics; grammar training; improvement of language and speaking skills. This is supplemented by a wide range of topics related to German society: geography, politics, culture and the economy. Studies are facilitated by the use of film, internet, and e-learning.

German Business Communication

This course is directly related to occupational realities. We study the practical and successful use of language in professional life in situations where we are dealing with scrutinising, discussing and deciding on one of a number of options. Furthermore, the course introduces you to the most important areas in company communication. The course programme combines language work (specialist vocabulary, grammar) with communicaton training (role plays) and business related cultural studies.

Writing and Language Workshop for Foreign Students

University socialisation is largely writing and language socialisation. In this course, students deal with the central techniques of academic language, such as summarising, paraphrasing, excerpting, quoting, and argumentation; they train in the composition of texts relevant to their studies, such as assignments, presentations, dissertations and grammatical peculiarities of the German language.

Open consultation for foreign students

At the open consultation times, the opportunity is provided to discuss together possible argumentation, formulation and formal alternatives in texts. Matters relating to grammar, syntax, spelling and punctuation can also be raised. We support the individual writing development of students by giving feedback and agreeing together on writing phases, content and structuring alternatives.
